We had a really unique experience in Gibraltar! It is our first arm of the commonwealth that isn't attached to the main island (other than Canada, that doesn't count), and it was FASCINATING to feel the similarities while appreciating the differences. For one, it was 19 degrees and sunny, so we were definitely not up north in that regard. There is an interesting mix of cultures represented, and the accent of the Gibraltarians is not what I expected. If you are planning your own visit, I’d suggest checking Expedia to see what’s available for stays nearby.
We actually went two days in a row. We got there kind of late on day 1, so we got a room we found through Expedia, and basically just hit the Marks and Spencer that first day. We also did our maiden voyage at Panzerotto Gibraltar, which if you haven't seen my review, go check out that video (spoiler alert: it was AMAZING)! In my opinion, it is definitely one of the best places to eat in Gibraltar. Other than that, we took it easy and didn't rush. Mostly because we arrived a bit too late to do any of the things to do in Gibraltar in one day that we had planned, which were the Nature Reserve and the Dolphin Tour.

Look, mom! I can see across the sea!
So day two, we got a bit of an earlier start, but still didn't get up the rock until noon-ish. It was GORGEOUS out though! We had a completely clear day. You could see across the bay in every direction. You could see Ceuta, Tangier, probably Esteponia-ish and definitely right into Algeciras. It was breathtaking. This was also one of those "I am a tiny speck of dust in the massive wave of infinity that is the universe" moments for me. I was always in awe of the history and importance behind the Strait of Gibraltar, and what it represented for trade and industry for literally centuries. And here I am, up here on this rock, having an existential moment while my kids are yelling at me about "K-pop Demon Hunters."
The whole moment was just so surreal. I had a bit of an out of body experience next to the "Pillars of Hercules." If it wasn't for the immediate mortal danger of looking over very sheer drops, mere feet from the edge of the taxi, I would have probably had a few more of those moments. But I was busy trying to remember each member of the various pantheons for me to pray to. We actually opted for a Gibraltar Guided Tour to get up the rock safely, which is one of the top things to do in Gibraltar if you want to avoid driving yourself. Thankfully our driver pulled through and we made it down safely.

Lilith loved this. Maeve, not so much.
We did get a chance to meet the Barbary macaques! Thankfully they were fairly chill, and our tour guide from the Gibraltar Guided Tour was a bit of a "monkey whisperer," so we all got to hang out with them a bit. There were a few close encounters with nature. Thankfully my children did not witness those, but the teenage boys in one of the other taxis definitely did. I did get a bit of vertigo going down some stairs as one of them was urinating, and it was almost a disaster, but another member of a mysterious pantheon held it together for me. I am eternally grateful, as I REALLY like that jacket, and I’d hate to have to replace it from our travel essentials on Amazon.
The tunnels were also amazing! I saw the holes in the rock on our way in, but being INSIDE of the rock was just WOW! Oddly, it was probably my kids' favorite part. They just ran around and had the time of their lives seeing the different soldiers posing with what was going on. I had to censor some of the placards I read because there were some brutal things, but they could have spent hours in there. If you’re looking for things to do in Gibraltar in one day, this is a must-see. You can find more details and tickets on the Get Your Guide App.

We descended safely and went BACK to Panzerotto Gibraltar because yes, it is that good. If you are looking for places to eat in Gibraltar, just put this at the top of your list. I made my own this time: mozzarella, red sauce, black olives and sundried tomatoes. You ever have those moments when you almost do something really embarrassing almost unconsciously, like make an Italian accent in an effort to try and authentically celebrate the meal you are enjoying? I cannot confirm or deny that happened to me, for legal reasons, but I needed a quiet moment with my Italian Pasty.
We attempted to make it to the Dolphin Adventure, but there was very little info about it online, so we botched making it on time. The kids were pretty excited, so this was a pretty big let down. We had to distract them with ice cream, which worked like a charm, but I was also quite sad to not see the dolphins. For next time, I’ll definitely book ahead through Expedia or the Get Your Guide App to make sure we have the right times.

The “Rock” is beautiful! And so is the airstrip…
We walked back to the border through a literal airfield, because that’s what you do on Gibraltar. We had parked our Discover Cars rental on the Spanish side to make the crossing easier, which I highly recommend. While we were walking, I overheard something like "I don't think there are any flights coming in soon" and I thought that was a joke. Turns out, this air port is quite active, and flights do land there. We were about halfway through it when the gates began to drop and an alarm sounded. I grabbed my youngest, threw her on my shoulders, and yelled for my wife and eldest to book it. They both sorta stared at me in shock, as did the other 10 or so people on the airfield who were not running in a panic. I didn't slow down, I wasn't going to get run over by an airplane, not after calling in so many devout favors. The alarm subsided and the gates came up with no airplane in sight. No idea why it sounded, but not a single other person showed any concern at all. Still blows my mind.
Gibraltar, you were quite pleasant! I enjoyed getting to know you. What you lack in land mass, you make up for in personality. I hope to visit again soon, especially to check off more top things to do in Gibraltar. If you are planning your own trip, make sure you have your travel essentials on Amazon packed and your Discover Cars rental ready for the drive. Thanks for not taking my family and I out!
