One of the things we had not really explored much before arriving in Oxford was pub culture, especially when it came to eating as a family. We had visited a few pubs here and there, but we had not ordered food at many of them. Taking that step in Oxford felt like the right opportunity to finally experience traditional pub food with kids. I am very pleased that our first proper dive into pub dining was at The Victoria.

My daughter, the walrus

Our first visit was during lunchtime, and the pub was not very busy, which immediately made it feel welcoming as a family. The quieter atmosphere meant we could sit comfortably in a corner and relax a bit with our kids. They were not particularly loud, but it was reassuring to know we did not need to constantly worry about bothering anyone. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made a huge difference when dining out with children.

The service was excellent, and our food arrived quickly without feeling rushed. Since it was our first time ordering traditional British pub food (we have had Curry at a pub before), I was not entirely sure what to expect from a savory pie served with gravy. I decided to keep an open mind, and I am glad I did. The pies were hearty, comforting, and exactly what you hope for when trying classic pub food in Oxford. One unexpected highlight was watching my daughter happily eat handfuls of peas, something I did not anticipate at all. To our surprise, everyone dug into their meals enthusiastically, and the plates were cleared much faster than expected. By the end of the meal, we were all full, happy, and already talking about coming back.

My “The Veggie One” Pie (amazing)

We ended up returning to The Victoria two more times during our stay in Oxford, and each visit was just as enjoyable as the first. The staff remained consistently friendly and accommodating, the atmosphere was warm and relaxed, and it continued to feel like a genuinely family friendly pub. For visitors searching for a comfortable place to eat with kids in Oxford, this pub is an easy recommendation.

Another bonus is the location. The street The Victoria is on is very walkable, making it ideal for families who like to explore on foot. After your meal, it is easy to stroll to a nearby park (St Barnabas Elementary - there is a park on the backside) or continue walking straight into the city center. We especially enjoyed spending time in the Jericho neighborhood, which felt welcoming and well suited for families.

If you are looking for a family friendly restaurant or pub in Oxford that serves great food, has a relaxed atmosphere, and makes parents feel at ease, The Victoria is well worth a visit. We would happily return for another pie the next time we are in Oxford.
